6. ABSENT MEMBERS
6.1 Absent Members List
The Membership Manager shall maintain an Absent Members List.
6.2 Notification and Eligibility
- A Member, other than a Short Term Member, Individual Debenture Member, Corporate Nominee Subscriber or Child Member, who is about to leave Hong Kong for a continuous period exceeding 3 months shall notify the Membership Manager in writing of his intention to become an Absent Member, of the expected date of his departure, and of his overseas address. It is the duty of an Absent Member to keep the Club informed of his overseas address and no responsibility or liability attaches to the Club if an Absent Member fails to do so.
- The 5 year or other period of membership of an Ordinary Member shall be suspended so long as the name of such Ordinary Member is placed on the Absent Members List.
- Save for Junior Members paying instalments towards the Ordinary Membership entrance fee, a Member who is paying his entrance fee by instalments may not have his name placed on the Absent Members List as a Life Absent Member until all instalments have been paid in full.
6.3 Failure to Notify or Pay Subscription
A Member, other than a Life Member, Short Term Member, Individual Debenture Member, Corporate Nominee Subscriber or Child Member, who leaves Hong Kong without having his name placed on the Absent Members List and without paying the Absent Members’ Subscription, or Life Absent Members’ Subscription, or without having paid or caused to be paid his normal subscription during the period of his absence, or a former Absent Member who has ceased to be a Member in accordance with of Article 6.7 shall be liable for a further payment of an entrance fee in full if he returns to Hong Kong and desires to resume membership of the Club: provided that the General Committee may, on good cause shown, re-instate such a Member, without payment of entrance fee, on payment of such sum as the General Committee may in its absolute discretion determine not exceeding the amount of the entrance fee that would have been payable by such Member if he had been elected a Member of the Club at the time that the General Committee agrees to re-instate him.
6.4 Monies Due to the Club
A Member about to leave Hong Kong shall pay all monies due from him to the Club prior to his departure.
6.5 Subscription Debentures and Building Levy
An Absent Member shall not be liable for his normal Subscription and Building Levy for any month in which he is continuously absent for 23 days or more. A Life Member not entered on the Absent Members List will be liable to pay the building levy whilst absent from Hong Kong. Neither an Absent Member nor Life Absent Member shall be subject to the provisions relating to the purchase of debentures whilst his name is entered on the Absent Members List, but shall be subject to the same upon his return to Hong Kong.
6.6 Absent Members’ Subscription
The subscription payable by an Absent Member shall be 1 month’s subscription as paid by Full Members, payable in advance and prior to departure from Hong Kong. The subscription payable by an Absent Member who is a Cadet Member shall be 1 month’s subscription as paid by Cadet Members and shall be paid on demand by the Club. Such subscription shall cover the period of 12 calendar months commencing with the month of departure.
6.7 Absent Members’ Annual Subscription and Cessation of Membership
An Absent Member who is still absent from Hong Kong at the expiration of the said period of 12 calendar months may renew his subscription by a further payment of 1 month’s subscription, as paid by Full Members (or as paid by Cadet Members as the case may be), but in default of renewal within 6 months after the expiration of such period his name shall be removed from the Absent Members List and he shall thereupon cease to be a Member of the Club. The annual subscription must be tendered by the Absent Member to the Club. The Club is not responsible or liable if an Absent Member fails to tender his annual subscription.
6.8 Life Absent Members’ Subscription
In lieu of the Absent Members’ Subscription an Absent Member may at any time commute his subscription for a single payment of a sum equal to 6 months’ subscription as paid by Full Members which shall thus entitle him to Membership for life when absent from Hong Kong for any continuous period exceeding 3 months without further payment. A Life Absent Member must ensure that his name is placed on the Absent Members List every time that he departs from Hong Kong for a continuous period exceeding 3 months.
6.9 Absent Member Returning
- Any Absent Member temporarily visiting Hong Kong who seeks to use the premises of the Club shall pay an administration charge as determined by the General Committee on each occasion of their return.
- If an Absent Member temporarily visiting Hong Kong for a period which includes 1 complete calendar month uses the premises of the Club during that visit, he shall pay the normal subscription, building levy and any other applicable charges payable by a Member for that complete calendar month but not for any part of the preceding and/or succeeding calendar months.
- If an Absent Member temporarily visiting Hong Kong for period which includes 2 or more complete calendar months uses the premises of the Club during that visit, he shall pay the normal subscription, building levy, and any other applicable charges payable by a Member not only for each of the complete calendar months he is in Hong Kong but also for the month preceding and/or the month succeeding the 2 or more complete calendar months notwithstanding that he has used the premises of the Club during only a part of either or both of such preceding and/or succeeding months.
6.10 Absent Member’s Membership Card
A Member whose name is placed on the Absent Members List shall at the request of the Membership Manager surrender his membership card to the Office for safe keeping until such Member returns to Hong Kong.
6.11 Re-Admissions
A Member who has resigned from the Club may apply to be re-admitted upon such terms and on payment of such entrance fee as the General Committee shall determine notwithstanding the provisions of Article 16.
6.12 Regulations
The General Committee may from time to time introduce new regulations regarding the method or manner in which a Member may apply for absent membership, or to renew absent membership, or how absent members may resume membership temporarily or permanently, as the General Committee may think fit.
